Turnout numbers are a ratio of the length to the width of divergence, in other words a number four diverges one unit (inches, mm, etc) for each four units of length, a number 5 diverges one in five, and so on. The larger the number the slighter the divergence, and the better longer locomotives will handle it.
Larry's right. #4's are the sharpest, and if I remember correctly, have an 18" radius. #4
switches are good for yards, but mainlines s/b #6.
